Chinese Gracchi

Not sure how I should react to this but I've just discovered that the Chinese censors are letting Gracchi slip through their net- obviously Turkish tobacco smoke and Imperial sex scandals in Rome aren't undermining communist rule. Its quite cool to have a look at this, though I'm not sure how reliable it is, anyway if anyone wants to check this website again (who knows it may be banned in the morning) or check their own- this website purports to tell you whether you are banned or not.

Hattip to Not Saussure who is blocked- to be honest I feel a bit left out- I think the server must be wrong or the censors haven't discovered how subversive film reviews can be!

they try and concentrate on the big blogs. I had one friend who had an america and middle eastern focused rightwing blog whose second biggest readership after the US was china- his blog was very newsrepoting so that's no doubt a big reason why!

Don't take it personally Gracchi. The entire Blogspot domain was blocked for a couple of years (until 2005, I think) and then the Nanny decided it was safe. Wordpress.com is newer, and all wordpress.com blogs are across the Great Firewall. I figure in another year, they'll arrive at the conclusion that Wordpress is not some nefarious plot either (or whatever the thinking is) and it too will be unblocked.

I have yet to find a single "big blog" that I can't access from here in China that was singled out as opposed to having the misfortune of choosing the wrong blog provider. And if I do, there are lots of proxies.

I'm not blocked either. That makes me feel guilty, because it means I'm probably not getting across that freedom and democracy are hard, and that money and despotism can get one economic growth and weapons and regional prowess, and lose what it is that makes us form nations in the first place in the process.

Oh, I'll share these with you because you're the one person who cares: I have a very, very right-wing take on Federalist 51 up at "The Irate Nation," and I'm slowly working through just one passage of Plato's Republic over at my blog. I'm not sure how many posts that's going to take to complete just yet.

Well I'm banned. Don't know if they object to "cricket" or "civilisation" or both ...

Definitely cricket Political Umpire- its that nefarious spin bowling.

I'm not too bothered to be honest- its just quite interesting to see whether you've been blocked or not thanks for the update Dave on what is and isn't blocked that is very interesting.

The net nanny's a fickle one, to be sure. BlogSpot was unblocked sometime around August 2006--I remember because it was my first week in China. It was reblocked in November, then unblocked again soon after. No method I've found to the madness. Thank goodness for proxies.

Great report on all this here: http://cyber.law.harvard.edu/filtering/china/

This is totally off-topic, but nowadays I'm thinking you're one of about 3 people that I write for. Have you seen the index to my writings past and present?

I was at Caroline Hunt's blog, thanks to your StumbleUpon recommendations, and I don't know how Britons understand American politics, but I don't think my writings on Lincoln are a bad place to start.

Ashok I'm gratified by your comment yes I would reccomend your posts to understand America. Caroline I think is an enthusiastic and nice Conservative- I don't know her views on America- but her blog is fun.
