Page 123

Paulie has just tagged me with this meme, the rules are

1. Pick up the nearest book.
2. Open to page 123
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post the next three sentences.
5. Tag five people, and acknowledge who tagged you.

Ok the nearest book I picked up was Sarah Barber's Regicide and Republicanism (its about the English Republicans in the seventeenth century who campaigned for the King's death). On page 123

A formal charge was issued on 20 January 1649 and sentence passed a week later.

Charles was found guilty of High Treason and executed outside the banquetting hall in Whitehall on 30 January 1649.

Kingship and the Lords were abolished on 17 and 19 March, and England was finally declared a Republic a month later.

They are pretty cool sentences, but then you find them in books about the English Civil War. I challenge Matt Sinclair, Vino Sangripillai, James Hamilton, James Higham and Welshcakes Limoncello to find some better ones.

First political memory

The Thunderdragon has tagged me for my first political memory.

My first memory is one of those Kennedy moments that everyone who was alive remembers which is the resignation of Margerat Thatcher. I remember coming home with my mother, from the supermarket I think, as a kid, and we drove in to our front drive way. I can still remember it really vividly and a neighbour came out and said to my Mum 'she's gone'. There wasn't any question of who 'she' was. I don't remember having any particular view on whether the fact that 'she' had gone was good or bad or discussing it with my parents, but I just remember the moment and getting out of the car. Its a very vivid memory but accompanied by almost nothing in the way of context.

Anyway I think this is quite an interesting meme and in service of that, I'm going to tag, Matt, Vino, Mike Rowley, Welshcakes, Ian Appleby, James Higham, Ashok, Lord Nazh and Yascha. So guys what was your first political memory- (Oh and by the way anyone else who wants to take this up- please do, its quite a cool meme and any of the regular commenters, Pappusrif and Edmund this means you for instance who want to leave a memory in the comments please do as well!)

Five (Sorry broke the rules- Seven) Blogs to make you think

I was told by Freemania that I make him think which is a lovely complement but like all complements it came with a pay off that I had to list five blogs which make me think about things. I'm wondering if towards the middle or end of the year I might do an Iain Dale style list of intelligent blogs- blogs which make you rethink your ideas a bit. It strikes me that in general you might say that whilst we in Britain have used blogging well to gossip about politics and critique the mainstream media and launch rebuttal services (the two blogs I've linked to are examples of the best of the genre gossip and rebuttal blogs but there are other good ones too, on both right and left), despite that we haven't been as good at manufacturing original analysis and ideas. Personally I think we need to do a bit of promotion on that front which is why at some point I might come up with a list of good analytical blogs that we could update like Dale's list from time to time- its just an idea.

Back to the matter in hand- Freemania has kindly posted the instructions for this meme on his blog and as I'm not one of those original thinkers, I'm going to copy him, indeed I think amongst the instructions for the meme is to be unoriginal in its presentation- oh well,

The participation rules are simple:

1. If, and only if, you get tagged, write a post with links to 5 blogs that make you think,
2. Link to this post so that people can easily find the exact origin of the meme,
3. Optional: Proudly display the ‘Thinking Blogger Award’ with a link to the post that you wrote

So five blogs that make me think- bear in mind that this isn't an exclusive list- its just what I've come up with on the spur of the moment, so there are many blogs that make me think that I haven't included but here are five very good, very impressive analytical blogs with different interests and political orientations which make me personally think,

1. Stumbling and Mumbling is in my view one of the best British blogs around- indeed he might even be the best blog in the British blogosphere. He always produces interesting research and summarises it well and provides an illuminating discussion. In many ways this blog's approach to history and to culture is inspired by his to economics. He comes from a particular viewpoint somewhere on the libertarian left, but he isn't doctrinaire and he is willing to discuss things. Even if you disagree with him, he is indispensible reading every day.

2. Sinclairs Musings is a blog run by Matthew Sinclair. Matthew is a good friend of this blog- he comes from the right and has some very pronounced views. But he is open minded and very willing to engage in discussion- he has engaged with me in a couple of discussions about history (I need to post replies soon) and with Stumbling and Mumbling at the moment on Rawls etc. He writes well and interestingly- again I often disagree with him, but I often find his posts difficult to pick apart and interesting to read.

3. More than Mind Games is a blog run by James Hamilton and its an incredibly interesting blog. It mainly concerns itself with sport and its focus within sport is with football but its interested in the psychology and history of the game rather than in a mundane he played well analysis. Often the insights that James produces aren't just relevant to football but relevant to all sorts of other fields of life, his writings about football's history and its place in our culture constitute a fascinating tour of a really important part of our national psyche in this century. Furthermore he uses youtube in a very entertaining and interesting way- often demonstrating points by video clips. His blog is another that you just have to read every day.

4.. Rethink by Ashok is a blog whose articles I often have to read several times to understand. I often disagree with Ashok but he is one of the most interesting people blogging on the net from America and he isn't very well known. His recent series on Macbeth was a very interesting set of posts- he read the play very closely and his conclusions were fascinating. He is another whose criticisms are always polite and very acute- especially of this blog. He writes well about complicated subjects and he always causes me to ponder. Its difficult to comment on his blog, not because its difficult nor because he doesn't welcome comments but because his posts are so intelligent that you have to think very hard in order to discuss them. His is a superb blog.

5. The Granite Studio is a fantastic blog. A bit more lighthearted than many of those on this list, he is a very interesting blogger because he writes easily about China, its history and its culture. I don't know anything about China, its history or its culture and the Granite Studio gives me a very pleasant read and a very pleasant way in. He is definitely a must read for anyone interested in the world around them- which I hope means everyone reading this blog.

That list of five is of course not exclusive there are so many other good blogs out there- the Inky Circus is the best of girl geekdom out there, fun and interesting its great, another one that immediately strikes me to be a must read is Abu Aardvark the best of writing on the Middle East on the net, I could go on but there are so many blogs which are interesting and inciteful on the net- I'm going to break the rules here and say that I'm naming seven, to have this list without Inky Circus or Abu Aardvark is to neglect two of the best blogs on the internet.

I hope there is something that takes your fancy here- these seven are all great blogs and definitely make me think, some of them with a wry smile and some of them with a very furrowed brow trying to track their meanings- all of them are written by people with engaging personalities and interesting things to say.

6 weird things about me

I've been tagged by the normally sane and wise Matt Sinclair with the meme six lesser known things about me, so here goes

1. Despite the history I write about in this blog, I'm not a great fan of narrative history with lots of dates and facts- give me conceptual history which tells me what people were thinking and analyses sources first.

2. I am absolutely useless at learning languages- I keep trying and keep failing.

3. I love microhistory- things like Montaillou etc fascinate me because its the mentalities of people in the past that really interest me.

4. I am half a New Zealander- my mother is from Christchurch and hence I have a Kiwi passport.

5. My music tastes are eclectic without neccessarily being any good- I know precious little about music and just appreciate good words and a good melody. My favourite bands at the moment are people like the Lucksmiths and Belle and Sebastien- dark words with an uplifting melody.

6. Art doesn't really manage to touch me much- I can't get emotional about a painting there is something flat about it and flat about the experience of looking at it. Its something that I am trying to work on but as yet- no success.

Right I suppose I have to tag someone else- well James Higham was complaining about finding it difficult to comment so in a gesture of friendship I suppose its incumbent of me to pass this on to him and of course having just ridiculously truncated Taiwanese history and pontificated upon Taiwanese culture and society I think I ought to pass this over to a man who actually knows his Chinese History the Granite Studio. Oh and I'll add my other fellow half Kiwi half Englishman- the superb Political Umpire. Right that's done- a serious post will follow at some point today!

Tagged

It appears I've been tagged with the meme Ten Things I would never do by the illustrious Mr Higham. To be fair I thought I'd offer some thoughts about this blog in it- there may be some personal stuff- but you could take this as a charter in a way for what this blog isn't trying to do- and once you've excluded that then its trying to do most of the other things whilst being vaguely political...

1. Write a post that doesn't need correcting in some way
2. Write a post that is purely party political
3. Consider that there are any limits at all on what it is useful to think about
4. Be relevant
5. (This is a sober one and should be presumed) Knowingly be sexist, racist, homophobic or upset anyone in anyway unless people get upset by a gentle query of their argument.
6. Refuse a cup of tea or an inclination to make a cup of tea whilst blogging
7. Take abusive comments seriously and leave them on the blog
8. Not benefit from helpful comments in refining my position and thinking it through a bit more.
9. Write a post that can't be twisted in some way to have a relevance to politics at all
10. Keep writing the Blog whilst feeling its no fun
11. (Last one I don't really count 6 I presumed it so it doesn't count honest we all have assumptions that's mine) eat anything that contains mustard blogging or not blogging!

There I've done it and now to redirect this meme I shall pick ten bloggers at random to direct it to too- so prepare yourselves comrades, in particular to your dislikes, Sinclair, El Dave, Political Umpire, Skipper, La Femme Contraire (a new discovery for me- thanks to the Umpire), Erik Ringmar, Laura James, Politaholic, The Yorkshire Ranter and lastly but not least a frequent commenter, Dreadnought.

All of these bloggers are worth reading- some like Mr Cole are unknown gems glistening in the wilderness of the internet, some like Professor Ringmar and Laura James probably unknown to the political classes but very worth reading for their insights into the world, the universe and all things in the first case historical and in the second criminal and some are some of my most penetrating commenters on this blog- step forward Umpire and Dreadnought, the last category including Politaholic, the Yorkshire Ranter, Skipper and La Femme Contraire are people I've just come across or just started reading either a few days or a few weeks ago- they seem worthy denizens of the great blogosphere though. So I hope anyone reading this takes the time out to pop over to these guys and have a look at what they've written.

And for those I've tagged I think the requirement is to tag another ten bloggers- have fun finding them.
